It’s no secret that Martin Cooper, the inventor of the mobile phone, drew inspiration from Star Trek. Although Motorola out did him when the invented the flip-phone. But nothing compares to what a bunch of wacked out swiss scientists have created. Obviously being the guys stuck in the middle of everyone else’s wars has taken it’s toll, as they’re latest contraption draws it’s inspiration from a certain other Sci-Fi franchise…

hydron collider

Apparently they took George Lucas a little too seriously, they’ve developed an obscenely large and wonderful machine - the Large Hadron Collider. They’re assuring the world that even though it’s sole purpose is to create a black hole, it’s not capable of destroying the planet. But, you know, it’s not even finished yet, so they obviously know ALL ABOUT how a machine fundamentally different from every other machine ever made will work. AWESOME!

There is a set of fantastic photos showing the device in it’s almost final stages. It’s so phenomenally huge you can’t help but think it is out of a film - it’s real impressive. See them here.

Don’t give the Swiss all the credit. The physicists involved hail from over eighty-five countries.

Yeah I know, but the idea of the Swiss controlling an enormous weapon akin to the Death Star under the guise of science is rather entertaining. Especially since it (atleast at time of posting) was seen as an express way to felo-de-se. It’s like the Swiss were all “BE QUIET AND STOP FIGHTING! SIT DOWN BACK THERE! DON’T MAKE ME TURN THIS PLANET AROUND AND GO RIGHT BACK WHERE WE CAME FROM!”
