There was huge drop in semicolon use from the 18th through the 19th centuries, from 68.1 per 1000 words to 17.7. And that’s just the start of the trouble…

Jan Freeman has a wonderful article about the state of the punctuated union in the Boston Globe. I’m such a fan of traditional punctuation and grammar, even if I am totally incompetent in its use myself. I really enjoy The New Yorker for just that reason.
